Support

A question about the app, a bug, a suggestion? There is no hotline behind Kidni, just one person who lives with kidney disease. Just write – every message gets read.

Usually answered within a few working days. Kidni is built alongside its author's own treatment – sometimes it takes a little longer.

Kidni is not an emergency service

With severe symptoms call 911 and do not wait for a reply. Support cannot answer medical questions, cannot judge your values and cannot recommend treatment – that is what your care team is for. Please do not send reports or health data by email either.

Common questions

Most things are settled here in a minute

If your question is not here, write to me. Questions that come up more than once end up on this page.

Getting started

What does Kidni actually do?

Kidni gathers what otherwise sits scattered across notes, calendars and memory in daily life with chronic kidney disease: medications and doses taken, fluid intake, weight and blood pressure, dialysis entries, appointments, lab values and nutrition.

The app follows your treatment phase and shows only what is needed there. On top of that comes the kidney guide – 65 articles, readable offline.

How do I choose my treatment phase – and what happens when it changes?

On first launch you choose between predialysis, peritoneal dialysis, hemodialysis and transplantation. You can change it any time under Settings → Change phase.

Nothing is lost when you switch: all entries are kept. If you switch back later, everything is there again – the phase only controls which areas are visible.

Which languages does Kidni speak, and how do I switch?

Kidni comes in ten languages: German, English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Hindi, Arabic and Japanese. Arabic runs right-to-left with a mirrored layout.

Switch under Settings → Language. The app language is independent of your system language; date and number formats follow it.

Which devices does Kidni run on?

On iPhone and iPad as well as Android phones and tablets. There is no web or desktop version.

Kidni only needs an internet connection for the food search and for ads in the free version – everything else works offline.

Kidni Pro and purchases

What does Kidni Pro include?

Pro unlocks the nutrition area with nutrient tracking and the food database, and the lab values with their history and PDF import. It also removes the ads.

Everything else – medications, vital signs, the dialysis diary, appointments, the guide and reports – is fully usable without Pro.

Is Kidni Pro a subscription?

No. Pro is a one-time purchase – no subscription, no renewal, no follow-up cost. It belongs to the account you bought it with, and therefore works on your other devices in the same store.

I bought Pro but it is not unlocked.

Open the Pro area and tap Restore Purchases. That fetches the purchase from the App Store or Google Play again.

Check that you are signed in with the same account you bought with. If it still does not appear, write to me – with the store, the purchase date and the receipt number if you have it.

Data, backup and privacy

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Kidni has no user account and no server of its own for health data – your entries are never visible to me.

On iPhone and iPad they are additionally synced with your private iCloud database, on Android backed up through Android's automatic backup. Both live in your own Apple or Google account and can be turned off in your system settings.

How do I move to a new device?

Within the same platform the system backup is enough: on iOS sign in with the same Apple ID and Kidni pulls the data from iCloud. On Android, Android's automatic backup kicks in while you set up the new device.

Moving between iOS and Android does not carry the data across – there is no shared storage for that. The CSV export under Settings → Data at least preserves your values.

How do I delete all my data?

Under Settings → Data → Delete all data, after a confirmation. This removes all entries including photos, all settings and all scheduled reminders; on iOS also on your other devices via iCloud. Because there is no account, nothing is left afterwards that could be linked to you.

What the app has already handed over is not covered: values written to Apple Health or Health Connect, and reports you have shared. You manage those there.

What does Kidni exchange with Apple Health or Health Connect?

Only if you switch the connection on explicitly: blood pressure, pulse and weight, in both directions. The exchange happens entirely on your device.

You can revoke the permission at any time in your system settings. Other data – nutrition, medications, dialysis, lab values – is never transferred.

Reminders, nutrition and lab values

My reminders are not arriving.

First check that Kidni is allowed to send notifications: on iOS under Settings → Notifications → Kidni, on Android under Settings → Apps → Kidni → Notifications.

On Android the most common cause is battery optimisation: exempt Kidni there, otherwise the system holds the reminder back. And recreate a reminder after you change the app language – the text is fixed when the reminder is scheduled.

What is a time-critical reminder?

A reminder that gets through even when your device is silenced or in a focus mode. It is meant for doses whose timing matters medically – immunosuppressants after a transplant above all.

You can switch it on per medication when you create or edit it. Use it sparingly: if everything is time-critical, nothing is.

A food is missing or a nutrient value is wrong.

You can create any food yourself and save it with your own values – it then stays in your list permanently.

The database comes from Open Food Facts, an open project. Wrong entries can be corrected there directly and then reach everyone. Please write to me anyway, especially for potassium and phosphate values.

How do I import a lab report as a PDF?

In the lab values area, use the import and select the report as a PDF. Kidni reads the values out and offers them for you to accept – common parameters such as creatinine, eGFR, potassium, phosphate, haemoglobin and PTH are recognised.

Check the suggestions before saving: lab sheets are laid out very differently and not every layout is read cleanly. The import is part of Kidni Pro.

How do I create a report for my appointment?

Under Settings → Data → Export doctor's report. The report is created on your device and contains your values with trend charts – as a PDF to print or a CSV for further use.

Whether and with whom you share it is entirely your decision, through your system's share function.

What helps with troubleshooting

  • Device and operating system version, such as “iPhone 14, iOS 18.5”
  • The app version from the very bottom of the settings
  • The app language and treatment phase you have set
  • What you did, what you expected, and what happened instead
